Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source or water-source heat pumps) use the more constant temperatures of the earth or water in a well or at the bottom on a pond as the exchange medium instead of outside air. This allows the system to reach fairly high efficiencies. The biggest benefit is that the system uses less electricity than conventional heating or cooling systems. Typically, a geothermal heat pump uses one unit of electricity to move three units of heat. The systems can be installed in both new and retrofit situations. Because they have few moving parts, and because those parts are sheltered inside your home, they are durable and highly reliable.
